Finding help for alcohol and other drug problems

South Australian Government's Response

The South Australian Government is committed to reducing the harms of alcohol and other drug use. The range of impacts requires a co-ordinated whole-of-government approach. To achieve this, South Australia has been guided by an alcohol and other drug Strategy since 1997.

South Australian Alcohol and Other Drug Strategy 2024-2030

South Australian Alcohol and Other Drug Strategy 2024 - 2030.

Preventive Health SA is developing the South Australian Alcohol and Other Drug Strategy 2024-2030 which aims to prevent and reduce the harms caused by alcohol and other drugs in the South Australian community. Public consultation on the draft Strategy closed on Tuesday 23 July 2024.

The Strategy focuses on 5 priority areas:

  1. Health promotion and prevention
  2. Disruption and supply reduction
  3. Early and targeted intervention
  4. Treatment and support
  5. Engaging communities.

While this Strategy is for the whole community, it acknowledges that alcohol and drug-related harms are not experienced equally across populations, and that these harms may be exacerbated by disadvantage and stigma.

The Strategy has been developed in consultation with a number of government and non-government partner agencies including Drug and Alcohol Services SA, Local Health Networks, South Australian Network of Drug and Alcohol Services, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and SA Police.

The draft Strategy is available at https://yoursay.sa.gov.au/saaod-strategy.
